Homes throughout Hibben vary in size, style and color – with traditional designs inspired by the architectural
history of Charleston and the Lowcountry.
“We’re trying to make Hibben as architecturally interesting as possible, to mix it up and make it fun,” says Julie O’Connor, community architect. (Before Hibben, she worked with the historic district commission of Nantucket.)
To match the neighborhood’s pedestrian-friendly layout, Julie is creating an evolving portfolio of original Hibben
designs. The homes are then built by a core group of custom builders who add their own special touches.
“We look at the streetscape and context to design houses that have their own character, but will look good
together,” she says. Key design features are wide porches, site-built masonry fireplaces, working shutters,
detached garages and rear entrance alleys.

Marshes and creeks border Hibben’s 130 acres, along with over two miles of walking trails and special areas
protected by The Nature Conservancy. There’s a park or playground within a four-minute-walk of every home.
Hibben residents have a new dock to share along Rat Hall Creek, and before long, there will be an oyster roast shed beside it. Situated on a terrific little bluff, it’ll be an “official” oyster roasting space – perfect for any kind of cookout or picnic.
Requested by the residents, the neighborhood’s very own zero-grade entry pool is set to open in late 2006. A community garden is also planned.
